INIT is on the move
- German-based company expands U.S. Headquarters -
CHESAPEAKE, VIRGINIA… INIT Innovations in Transportation, Inc., the American subsidiary of German based INIT Ag, has announced plans to expand its U.S. headquarters in Chesapeake, Virginia. Accelerated business growth in the Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) industry created the need for the company’s expansion into the Crossways II building, located in Chesapeake’s Greenbrier Business Area. ITS for public transit are high-tech products and services that help transit authorities operate more efficiently.
The new location provides INIT with approximately 9,000 square feet of office space, as well as a test lab environment to develop sophisticated ITS solutions for its customers. The expanded space will allow INIT to better serve recently awarded new contracts to create intelligent transportation systems for several major U.S. metropolitan areas. Additionally, INIT will hire approximately 34 new employees over the next 2˝ years. INIT currently employs a workforce of 16 including software and hardware engineers.
Dr. Jurgen Greschner, President & CEO of INIT Inc. said, "It is a major decision for an international company entering the U.S. market to decide where to base its operations. We are proud of the qualified staff we have with us now and enjoy the high quality of living in the Hampton Roads area. The Chesapeake Economic Development Department has greatly supported our initial move to the area and the current relocation process as well. We are looking forward to working in our new facility and continuing our very positive relationship with the City of Chesapeake."
Mayor William E. Ward is excited about INIT's rapid growth since initially locating to Chesapeake in 1999. "We were extremely pleased when INIT located in our City and their current expansion confirms that Chesapeake provides the assets necessary for dynamic business growth,” said Mayor Ward. “The sustained growth of international companies such as INIT demonstrates that Chesapeake continues to be a major player in the global economy. We are delighted that INIT's expansion creates 34 new job opportunities in our community."
INIT is serving U.S. and Canadian customers from the headquarters in Chesapeake and has recently been awarded substantial new contracts with several transit authorities in the U.S. A trio of transit authorities in the Illinois and Indiana areas jointly signed a $4.5 million contract with INIT to provide ITS for their transit fleets. The software and hardware are used in the vehicles, in the Control Center, and also wayside at bus stops. The transit authorities will receive a Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) and Automatic Vehicle Location (AVL) systems that work with GPS satellite technology. Another important project has recently begun in Albany, NY.
The Capital District Transportation Authority (CDTA) and its customers will soon be utilizing INIT's sophisticated technology, such as Passenger Information Displays located at bus stops to advise in real-time when the next bus will be departing. Dispatchers will also use the CAD/AVL System to be better informed and to help manage their tasks. A total of 345 transit vehicles will be equipped by INIT within this $7+ million contract.
